Help me decipher some confusing lyrics

Harem Scarem has quickly become my favorite band- they are one of the most original and creative bands to come out of the late 80's...sometimes creative though, can be confusing...I have been trying to figure out what the song "The Paint thins" is about...great, rockin song....here is a live video- the solo is especially good...

and here are the lyrics...
Harem Scarem The Paint Thins Lyrics:
(Hess/Lesperance)
Rage, your involuntary martyr
Caged by the conscience and the throne
Gotta fight for what you need
But be careful what you breathe
Staged by the puppets and the trolls
Fame for the power hungry mongers
Enslaved by the towers made of stone

Will the Virgin Mary grieve
For the parting of the sleaze
Insane in every sense of the word
A pending haze on this trite sinned world
Wait til we lay still
Dare we stray to this right wing world
We gave in - the paint thins
Claims to a sacreligious other
They dangle the carrot in front of me
And the acid burns the keys
To the doors that house the weak
Only saved by exile to kingdom come
Now, I consider myself of average to above-average intelligence, but I am confused as to what this song is about, and it has been driving me CRAZY...what the hell are paint thins anyhow...any ideas anyone?

I'm horrible with lyrics and figuring out "what they mean." Every listener is open to interpret the song in their own way.

For me, the song, music and melody come first. Lyrics last. That's probably why I like Def Leppard so much. As Joe Elliott once said, their lyrics are "deep and meaningless."
